Diamond District

The Diamond District Neighborhood in NYC

The Diamond District in New York City is the stretch between 5th and 6th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan, and encompasses just about one block. This borough is one of the primary centers of the global diamond industry and the leading center for jewelry shopping in the entire city. In fact, Diamond District is one of the largest diamond and jewelry districts in the country. Over 90% of the diamonds that come into the US go through New York first, mostly through the Diamond District.

With two large diamond motif street lights flanking the crosswalk at the entrance on 5th Ave, the Diamond District is very hard to miss. Interestingly enough, the Diamond District wasn’t always located in Midtown Manhattan. The famous jewelry district was originally located on Maiden Lane, four blocks north of Wall Street. However, in the 1920s, wealthy banks increased rent in the area, forcing the District to relocate to 47th Street.

Tips for Shopping in the Diamond District

Shopping in the Diamond District has been characterized as being a bazaarlike marketplace. Many of the retailers, who consist of wholesalers, retail jewelers, and thousands of independent jewelers, simply line the streets outside. As it can be overwhelming to shop on this busy stretch, it’s important to be prepared for the ultimate jewelry shopping experience.

Because the District is full of so many retailers to choose from, it’s essential to do some research before you go. Research the jewelry options, but most importantly research the jewelers so that you can feel good about purchasing from a company you can trust. It is also recommended to schedule an appointment beforehand with the jeweler(s) you are interested in. This way, you’re able to see all the pieces you are most interested in without getting sidetracked by all the other vendors.

An additional tip for shopping in the Diamond District is don’t buy too quickly. Shop around, compare your options, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to haggle. There is often some wiggle room to negotiate a price. Most importantly, if you are buying diamonds, make sure they are Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified.
