Nail Fungus

Treatment options for infected nails

Nail fungus is also known as onychomycosis. It affects about 12% of all Americans, can run in families and is more common in toenails than in fingernails.

Fungal infections like tinea versicolor and ringworm can affect various areas of the body. These infections can even imact the toe and fingernails. Nails that are infected by fungus can appear thickened, discolored and may separate from the nail bed. Treatment of fungal infections usually requires oral anti-fungal medicines for 2-4 months. Improvement is very gradual due to the slow regrowth of nails. Topical options are available for select cases, but are not as reliable and may take longer to be effective.
